| The Michael Chekhov Theatre Company was formed by Michael Horn in June 2003 to be a group
devoted to the “work” of storytelling. Comprised of some of NY’s hardest working Actors and Directors,
private gatherings took place on a weekly basis with in-house critique. And it was good. Then, out
of nowhere, Michael Horn was struck by lightning. He voiced his thought. A heated argument broke out.
“No, you can’t produce all of Sam Shepard’s plays.” “Yes, I can.” “No, you can’t!” “Can too!”
“CAN’T!” “CAN!” A line was drawn. People took sides. Al as, bets were made.
Call it stubbornness, call it genius, Michael Horn would have his festival. Members joined together. Sam Shepard Series 1 came; then 2; then 3; then 4! Admittedly, we wondered, “what have we gotten ourselves into?” And yet, never did we expect the mass of support, thanks and praise from audiences and reviewers alike. The work, the storytelling: a service to the community! Who would have known? Michael Horn? A resolution was made. We will be that company. We will be that theatre that presents ALL of the works of a great artist in one festival. The only place in the world to see an entire canon! And it’s been good. Of course, we soon discovered that this undertaking comes at a great expense. With little funding, and many of the members going into personal debt, we really need outside help – your help – to continue on. Many fireworks are on the way! Not only 25 Shepard shows, but future festivals as well: Shanley, Rabe, Odets, Chekhov, Brecht. Your gift goes solely toward the productions themselves. We are a “no salaries, no free lunch bunch.” Let it be done. Please donate to MCTC. |
