Tom Herman
Buried Child (Director)
Tom’s work has been a staple of New York City’s Theatre Row, Resident and
Off-Off-Broadway theatres for more than a decade. Most recently, he directed highly acclaimed revivals of
Lobby Hero and Cloud Nine at Brooklyn’s Gallery Players and Matthew Calhoun’s quirky new romance, Worm Day,
at the DR2 Theatre in Union Square for Obie Award-winning producer Jeff Britton. Many of the plays Tom has
directed have been world or NYC premieres and have gone on to be published, such as Edward Musto’s The Ninth
Circle, Yasmine Rana’s Decent, William Gadea’s Touch and Michael T. Folie’s Lemonade. While primarily
interested in discovering new playwrights and developing new works, Tom has also directed plays from the past,
including Schiller’s Mary Stuart and the relatively unknown Think Twice, a thriller by controversial novelist
Ayn Rand that had never before been produced in New York City. NYC theatres at which Tom has directed include
Ensemble Studio Theatre, the DR2, Pulse Ensemble, Vital, The Mint Space, Theatre 603, 45th Street Theatre,
Inner Space and West Side Theatre Center. He has also directed regionally at Virginia’s Wayside Theatre.
In addition to his directing, Tom has served as Literary Manager or script reader for several groups in town;
he currently reads scripts for The Public Theater. Tom is a graduate of Yale.
